Eight to ten members meet every second Wednesday of the month at Anne's House.
from 10.00am to 12.00 noon.
| Dr. Roger Cloet, whose firm
opinion was that it was not necessary that an actual scientist should lead science groups,
encouraged the formation of U3A Science Groups in 1994. He felt only enthusiasm, a place
to meet, and access to suitable educational material was required. At that time, Kate
Marshall took up the challenge in Oswestry, and led a Science Group until 2001 (seven
years). Material from an O.U.Pre-Foundation Course called "Into Science" was purchased, and this was used as a basis for study for half of the two hourly meetings, which were then held twice a month. For the second hour of each meeting, after a much needed coffee, cuttings from newspapers and periodicals were discussed, hoping to keep the group in touch with more recent scientific developments from a layman's point of view. Science history was studied, starting with the Greek Philosophers, and reaching up to the last century. Individual members contributed research on the various famous scientists. Later, the book "Science and Wonders" by Russell Stannard was read aloud around the group. It contained thoughts on Religion from well-known modern scientists, and this led to much discussion. The O.U.Course S102 provided other pieces of interest and studies ranged from biology to astronomy. More recently, members gave presentations on their chosen topics. These included The Human Genome; Global Warming; Ecology; The Origins of Life on Earth; Stem Cells; Aspects of the Brain; Time Storms and Viruses (with special reference to Bacteriophages ) After 2001, Derek & Cynthia Gregson took up the leadership and hosted meetings. The last subjects taken up by this original group were studied on excellent BBC videos from a series called "Body Matters". The New Science Group are considering re-viewing some of those, which were informative and interesting. Many original members are part of the new group, plus several newcomers. Anne Roper is pleased to host these meetings, but considers the direction studies will take is constantly subject to discussion, and will hopefully make use of any knowledge held by the members, or gained through their enthusiasm. February 12th We started with a video from U3A Resources called "Energy, the Pulse of Life". Keeping to the old format, we will then read-out collected cuttings after our coffee break, usually relevant to chosen studies, or very topical to modern life. The final hour will be studying and reading aloud a book "Marvels of the Mind", a pretty comprehensive study of the brain, plus some psychology. |
